CJI questions the government regarding sedition laws NewZ

Why do you need the ‘colonial law’ of sedition, Chief Justice of India asks the Union.

It is prone to misuse by the government

These are the questions that should be raised by the public and the Indian judiciary. Sedition laws were made by the British Empire when India was their colony. These regulations existed to keep the Independence movement in check so that Britishers could keep India in their tyranny. They were made to bind the media. Why do they still exist? After the Independence, they persisted because no one paid much heed to them as national leaders had a country to unify and run. Then they were not questioned because our democracy and Constitution ensured that there would be no abuse of power by the government. But now the situation is getting out of hand. BJP government is not abiding by the Constitution so there is blatant misuse of power. Sedition cases are rising exponentially. The right to speech and freedom of media has been violated by the government countless times. So now the question raised by our Chief Justice was necessary. Our nation won its liberation 74 years ago, we should not be still subjected to colonial laws.
